During lockdown, songwriter, John Steele wrote and produced two critically acclaimed solo albums. Once restrictions allowed, John set up a band comprised of his old bandmates from Fall Dogs; Ian McNamara on drums and Barry Heaney on guitar. He also added Sean Fox on bass, from his other band, The Flag Listeners. The band has received significant record label interest, but have yet to find the right label to partner with.
Known for his emotionally direct lyrics and melodic instincts, Steele has built a reputation as a compelling storyteller. With The Rocket Surgeons, he widens the lens — pairing intimate songwriting with a full-band sound that’s both muscular and atmospheric. The result is music that balances raw honesty with lift-off ambition: urgent guitars, driving rhythms, and choruses built for both headphones and live rooms.
On Saturday, March 21st, The Rocket Surgeons release their second single from their forthcoming album. The song is called Another You, and is a relentlessly driving punk/pop song that showcases a new direction in Steele’s songwriting along with a band who know eachother well enough to be almost telepathic on stage. The band will play a full set of original songs from the forthcoming album, along with older material from Steele’s back catalogue and possibly a choice cover.
The Rocket Surgeons draw from alternative rock, indie, and classic songcraft, but avoid too much nostalgia. Their sound is forward-facing and dynamic, designed to hit hard while leaving space for nuance and vulnerability.
Another You is a humorous poke at those annoying people that you just can’t seem to get away with. “I ran for miles around the world, to find another you.”.
“John Steele is a writer and musician of real substance.” Stuart Clarke – Hotpress.
