JAZZ BLOGS

It’s a tribute to the quality of her songs that they convince in any setting. The live shows are peppered with muso humour and political comment but it’s the power of Gillespie’s voice and of her songs that make her concert and club appearances so memorable
. The Jazz Mann,

Jazz is blended in with the blues and folk: the tunes and pungent images get into your head and hang around. Atzmon called her a 'jazz wordsmith, a poetic rebel'. She's also a fine guitarist and ardent performer.  London Jazz  News

Limerick Jazz Festival - Septeto Internacional

Tickets €18. - Strictly over 18's

Tickets €18. - Strictly over 18's

SEPTETO INTERNACIONAL is a unique combo of seven musicians from Cuba, Brazil, Spain and Switzerland. The repertoire consists entirely of Michael Fleiner’s own compositions in afro Caribbean and Latin jazz styles. It is music for the ears and the legs, for music lovers and dancers alike, performed by three virtuoso wind instrumentalists and a groovy rhythm section.

Michael is always searching in his compositions for interesting ideas from different styles to develop Latin jazz and afro Caribbean music and to give it a personal touch. You can find jazz harmony as well as contemporary rhythm concepts, traditional and modern Latin music, or even ideas from mathematics and physics which gave Michael the nickname “El Matemático del Latin Jazz” (the mathematician from latin jazz) in Latin America.

These very different elements are always packed in a hot and spicy Latin groove.

The actual CD is titled “Como me gusta el 7” (I do really like the number seven) is a reference to the odd time signatures (7/4 and 5/4) and the unconventional art of Michael’s music writing, the 7 musicians of the band (the perfect balance between 3 horn players and 4 musicians in the rhythm section to interpret his compositions and arrangements) Michael’s birthday 7 Feb. 1970 and the general specialty of the number seven: the seven notes of the scale, the seven days of the week, the seven wonders of the world; seven is a prime number; seven is a lucky number!...

Michael does really like the number seven!

The Septeto Internacional has already been invited to perform in Europe (Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Slovakia) as well as in Latin-America (Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, French Guiana, Suriname) at international Jazz Festivals, Jazz Clubs, Salsa Discos and Folk Festivals.

The musicians from the band are very professional and have a great experience. They play and have played with the most famous musicians in Jazz and Latin Jazz: Chucho Valdés, Irakere, Celia Cruz, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Dizzy Gillespie, Pablo Milanés, Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Henderson, Giovanni Hidalgo, Raoul de Sousa, Dave Valentin, Danilo Pérez, Isaac Delgado, Julio Baretto, etc…

Last but not least: The trumpeter Juan Munguía had played over 15 years in the legendary Cuban band IRAKERE from Chucho Valdés.

So don’t miss the occasion to hear and see this extraordinarily exciting band with excellent musicians coming from different countries.

Line-Up:

Juan Munguía - CUBA – trumpet & flugelhorn

Limerick Jazz Ferstival presents:

Beats & Pieces Big Band take the big band sound to places it’s never been before, with a distinctive blend of rocking energy and precise dynamics, infectious floor-filling rhythms and widescreen arrangements, and generous individual freedom and tight collective interplay. Embracing modern textures and techniques while acknowledging and celebrating their big band lineage, they’ve earned a reputation for a joyful interaction between audience and band, with songs to make you think, dance, laugh and cry.

This exciting ensemble led by composer/conductor Ben Cottrell boasts 14 musicians, many of them bandleaders in their own right, with each player’s distinct musical background and individual voice being key to the collective band identity. Now in their 11th year, Beats & Pieces are a rarity in keeping a fairly consistent lineup for so long - especially remarkable for a group this size. Such is the level of trust and friendship across the group that they perform entirely from memory, effortlessly switching between super-tight ensemble playing and generous soloistic expression in the same way as a trio or quartet.

Gemma Sugrue and the Julien Colarossi Quartet

Gemma Sugrue and the Julien Colarossi Quartet

Guitarist Julien Colarossi born in Settefrati (Italy) moved to Ireland in 2007 to pursue his musical career. After obtaining a BA in Jazz Performance in 2011 Julien went off to become one of the most exciting young guitarists to emerge in recent years on the Irish Jazz scene. After recording, writing, arranging, producing and collaborating on more than 20 albums, playing all the major jazz festivals in the country and having been a part of many different original projects, Julien’s sights were now set on bringing his own compositions to life with a vocalist.

Julien invited Gemma Sugrue to sing with his quartet at The International Bar (Wicklow Street, Dublin) last year and the group instantly clicked and Gemma began to make a regular appearance. There was a sense of ease and fun to the music making which enticed the group to capture it on record. All of the band members have quite eclectic musical tastes and playing styles including the singer, Gemma who is well known as a pop/soul vocalist, lending her vocals to epic dance tunes performed by 2fm's Jenny Greene and the RTE Concert Orchestra where they’ve performed sold out shows at The Three Arena, The Marquee, Electric Picnic and many more.

Gemma is also a well known vocal coach and the business owner of Voiceworks Studio, a chain of vocal coaching centres in Cork and Kerry. She holds a BMus Hons and MA in classical vocal performance but now considers herself a contemporary vocalist exclusively.

The album, In My Nature takes a traditional jazz approach to the instrumentation and the manner in which it was recorded but there’s no escaping the collective’s broad range of musical influences and individual flair which ebbs and flows throughout the record from standards to original compositions.

The band’s true super power however is in their live performance, from the dynamic and attentive Dominic Mullans on drums to the inventive, exciting and considered bass playing by Barry Donohue to the florid, free-flowing, magical, musical musings of Johnny Taylor on piano. The collective are a conscientious one, allowing space to breath for the singer’s narrative and melody which are expanded upon and really blossom into full technicolour with the spellbinding and thrilling guitar playing from Julien Colarossi.
