Attention Earth! Do not be alarmed.
Contact with the extra-terrestrial musical collective - HENGE - is imminent.
HENGE is a band of intergalactic ravers; practitioners of the sacred sounds of Cosmic Dross – a musical form known in other parts of the universe that has, until now, never been heard on Earth.
There are no human words to adequately describe the Cosmic Dross experience, though its sound is characterised by the thundering drums of Nom – an amphibious creature from the Sirius Star System – the garment-rending bass frequencies of last surviving Venusian, Goo, and the whacked-out synths of the band’s only human, Grok. Over this instrumental framework, the band’s founder, Zpor, sings of his space travels, evoking a joyous celebration of life and encouraging humans to end war, save their species and colonise space.
HENGE will give Cosmic Dross its dawning moment on your planet as they introduce the human species to this alien genre…. This is their debut album: ’Attention Earth!’.
From meditations on Earth’s own heavenly body (‘Moon’), to prophetic warnings from far away worlds (‘Machine Landscape’), and even an ode to the spacecraft that transported HENGE across time and space to the Milky Way (‘Mushroom One’); ’Attention Earth!' is a light-speed journey through otherworldly sounds, an ecstatic hymn to the wonder of life and a joyful incitement to a peaceful existence.
HENGE have come in the name of rave to spread their message of love and harmony.
They have scheduled a series of landings across the United Kingdom. These gatherings are held with the aim of provoking the proliferation of joy amongst humans... these will be close encounters of the HENGE kind.
Alan Keary is a multi instrumentalist and producer, with a strong musical heritage, writing and producing music from the age of fourteen. Now based in Manchester and performing under the alias Shunya, his sound is an amalgamation of influences, ranging from his early musical background of classical violin to the sounds of Manchester's electronic music scene which compliment his highly accomplished abilities as a jazz bassist. With influences referencing artists such as Flying Lotus, Bjork and Eric Whitacre.
In early 2017, Shunya's name saw a rapid increase in notoriety when his single Wonder N Wane (feat Hayley Pip Williams) was picked up by Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and BBC radio Manchester. Ilovemanchester also ranked Shunya in their “top 5 local bands making it big in Manchester”.
His recent collaboration with DJ Yoda's & Breakfast of Champions live band has gained Shunya a notable reputation as a collaborator. With co-writing on tracks such as "Pebble Beach" going on to be play listed by BBC 6Music.
Other notable collaborations include Werkha, (Tru Thoughts, Brownswood Bubblers) & Josephine Oniyama (Rubyworks), lending arrangement and performance of strings & bass.
Shunya's self-titled release also features appearances from GoGo Penguin drummer Rob Turner and session drummer Craig Hanson on the track 'The Beauty of Being the Void'. Singer Hayley Phillipa Williams features throughout the E.P and brings a haunting yet soulful feel to tracks such as 'The Elaborate Hoax', suggesting connotations reminiscent to the music of Kate Bush. Shunya continues to collaborate with various artists and musicians with a vision to combine everything into one boiling pot, defying the notion of 'genre'.
"What Shunya are doing is super-creative, unique and musical! They're not very good-looking, but you can't have it all!" - DJ Yoda
'We've been watching Shunya since he first started out. His latest EP Mountain Gazer is a massive leap forward in both production and composition. Definitely one to watch out for.- GoGo Penguin
“For me the combination of real sounds and synthetics is well balanced and special, the way it grows and shifts through different genres and moods, soul, jazz, world, mysticism, is natural and happens organically. The production is original and inventive, but without overpowering the passion or the soul of the music, melodies and emotion” - Josephine Oniyama
“Not only are Alan's string arrangements imaginative, he is a consummate all-round musician with innovative ideas that shine within his music” -Mike Bennet, Producer (Ian Brown, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Specials)
